Choose Marksmanship if you want an Aimed Shot direction, or Beast Mastery if you want to build around pets. A fresh Hunter’s dated official card showed 240 HP and Auto Shot. The Kill Shot talent can replace that opening with Aimed Shot, so the two starters are not contradictory.
Evidence checked 2026-10-28: the official menu research records 240 HP and Auto Shot. Public Hunter talent records separately describe Kill Shot changing the opening spell. The guide distinguishes a fresh card from a developed character.
Marksmanship plan: Auto Shot toward Aimed Shot
The Hunter class guide describes an Aimed Shot route using Piercing Shots, Rapid Fire, and the Kill Shot capstone. A separate Hunter talent record describes the same distinction between the default opening and the capstone opening. These are attributed talent records; no current-patch damage comparison is claimed.
- Start from Auto Shot on a fresh character. Consider Multi-Shot or Volley when offered if clearing the surrounding pack is the immediate problem. Those names are recorded in the public Hunter build research, not a guaranteed draft.
- As points become available, follow the current Marksmanship prerequisites toward Rapid Fire and Kill Shot. An Aimed Shot-start video may already have this progression; it is not evidence that a new Hunter starts with Aimed Shot.
- If you survive the pack but struggle to finish bosses, inspect the Aimed Shot and critical-hit support choices. If survival is the problem, spend a pick on recovery or protection instead of assuming a bigger crit will solve it.
Beast Mastery alternative
Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival are the three tree names in the class sources. The Beast Mastery alternative described by the public Hunter guide uses the wolf/pet milestones and Bestial Wrath, with Multi-Shot as an accompanying draft option. Pick the pet direction when that is the play style you want, rather than treating it as an automatic upgrade over Marksmanship.
Pet damage, collision and threat behavior have not been established by this guide. Keep moving and preserve distance instead of assuming a pet will always protect you. You can earn up to 51 talent points per class; a developed pet build is not a fresh-account baseline.
Gear and race choices
The separate Hunter record attributes a lifesteal-first, then cooldown/damage jewellery preference to a player recording. That is one player’s developed-character example, not a universal item order. Use recovery if damage taken is the limiting factor, and compare offensive support only after survival is consistent. See the items reference for sourced names rather than importing ordinary WoW item stats.
For races, compare the documented damage, cooldown, or progression lines on the racial table. Their numeric effects remain official single-source observations; this guide does not calculate a best race from them.
Sources, version, and using this plan
The route names and spell pairings above are attributed to the public Hunter class guide and the class material collected on 28 October 2026. They are published planning examples, not an official ranking or a tested damage comparison. Holdherhand’s Marksmanship Naxxramas title identifies the example’s route. Two older public S-tier placements are opinions about older builds, not proof of a current best-spell order.
Watch the public Hunter example — uploaded 2026-10-24; the game version is not established by the research record. A video upload date is not a patch number. The menu facts come from Aethus’s original game, a single official source; see the dated version record before applying an older talent route.
Questions
Does Hunter start with Auto Shot or Aimed Shot?
The fresh official menu card showed Auto Shot. Public talent records say Kill Shot can start runs with Aimed Shot, so progression changes the answer.
Should I pick Marksmanship or pets?
Use the attributed Marksmanship route for an Aimed Shot goal, or inspect Beast Mastery’s pet milestones for a pet-focused plan. Follow available cards and current prerequisites; no clear-speed ranking is established here.
Sources and verification limits
Checked 2026-10-28. Two independent publishers are needed to call a claim confirmed. A menu, screenshot and script from Aethus count as one publisher. Exact menu HP, racial values and dated build identifiers are single-source observations. A video or a general game report does not independently verify every number. Missing values remain unreported; disagreements stay attributed.
